Christie will offer one of the largest lunar eclipses in existence for private sale

Christie's International Auction House will offer one of the largest lunar eclipses in existence for private sale.  This is the fifth largest piece of the moon, larger than any lunar rock returning through the Apollo program.  Christie's Gift NWA 12691, an important lunar rock, is known to be the largest in existence.  Lunar rock is one of the rarest materials on Earth, with lunar meteorites weighing less than 650 kg. This example is the fifth largest piece of the moon on Earth, larger than any returned by the Apollo program.  The £ 2 million region-wide sample is available for immediate purchase through Christie's private sales.

Lunar eclipses landed on Earth after exploding on the lunar surface due to a collision with an asteroid or comet.  All of the moon's major fertilizers were made with such effects.  The meteorite in particular was part of a vast meteor shower that crosses the western Saharan, Algerian and Mauritanian borders, accounting for half of the lunar known lunar halves.  Approximately 30 different meteors were collected, analyzed, classified, and assigned different NWA numbers in the belief that they could be from different events and represent different lunar patterns.  But it has been decided that they all started with the same lunar effect event as the current offer.  NWA 12691 was found in the Sahara Desert two years ago.

James Haslop, head of Christie's Science and Natural History, said: "I've been so lucky to have been able to handle a few lunar eclipses during Christie's time over the years, but every time I see this specimen in a warehouse, the sheer size of it bowls me over. It weighs over 13.5 kilograms, far more than anything offered before. The experience of holding a piece of another world in your hand is such which you will never forget. Christie is also offering a group of 13 aesthetic iron meteorites for sale privately.  Formed from scratch, this group of natural roofs forms a significant collection of aesthetic wrought iron in private hands. The collection, estimated at  £ 1.4 million in the region, is also available for immediate purchase through Christie's private sales.
